A meeting with Arthur Vance would finally bring some of Elspeth Finch's last instructions to light, or it would confirm that her final wishes would remain a closed book. Genevieve Martel clutched the manila folder containing the photograph, the John Doe report, and her notes, the proof she needed to compel the attorney to speak. She had to convince him that Julian Croft's vanishing act was linked to another man's death.

It was Sunday, October 6th, and the air held the crisp bite of autumn in Seneca Quay. Genna had called Arthur Vance's office first thing this morning, bypassing his assistant with a direct plea for an urgent consultation. To her surprise, he had agreed to see her before church, stipulating only twenty minutes. His office, a stately brick building on Main Street with a historical plaque, was usually closed on weekends. She arrived a few minutes early, finding the heavy oak door unlocked.

Arthur Vance sat behind a large mahogany desk, already wearing his dark suit, a faint scent of coffee lingering in the air. He gestured to the leather chair opposite him, his expression formal, his silver hair neatly combed.

"Good morning, Genevieve Martel," he said, his voice precise. "I allotted you twenty minutes. I trust this matter is truly urgent to warrant a Sunday call?"

"It is, Mr. Vance," Genna replied, placing the folder on the polished desk. "I believe I have uncovered significant information regarding Elspeth's intentions for the quilt. Information that directly concerns Julian Croft's disappearance."

He cleared his throat. "I am bound by client confidentiality, as you know. Elspeth was quite specific that the quilt itself was the key, but offered no further elucidation."

"Then allow me to offer some," Genna said. She extracted the water-damaged photograph first, sliding it across the desk. "This photo was found in a hidden locker at Gable's Marina, along with a key Elspeth stitched into the quilt. The man in it is not Julian Croft."

Arthur picked up the photograph, his brow furrowing as he studied the unfamiliar face. He placed it down carefully. "An interesting discovery, to be sure. But how does it relate to the estate?"

Genna then laid out the John Doe report David Chen had retrieved. "This is a coroner's report for an unidentified man found dead at the commercial docks in Seneca Quay. The date on the report is October 11, 1994, with the death estimated around October 10th. The cause of death was a fall."

Arthur adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, picking up the document. He scanned the details, his gaze lingering on the date. "Nineteen ninety-four," he murmured. "Julian Croft's disappearance."

"Precisely," Genna affirmed. "The report notes a specific mark on the man's left forearm. A small, distinctive scar. That same mark is visible in the photograph." She pointed to the faint detail on the photo. "And Elspeth even stitched a tiny figure with a red mark on its arm into the marina block of the quilt, a symbol I deciphered as 'a thing marked'."

She paused, letting the implications settle. "The official story of Julian Croft's disappearance is that he vanished at sea. His empty boat, the *Wanderer*, was found by Sam Gable. But this report details a death at the docks, an accidental fall, and a body found and buried as unidentified, just days before Julian was reported missing."

Arthur leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. "Be that as it may, Elspeth never spoke of an unidentified body."

"She may not have, but the quilt does," Genna countered, pulling out her notes. "I deciphered a coded message in the quilt's border, six knots in gray thread. They spell out a specific date: October 15, 1994. That date was a Saturday. It was also Seneca Quay's bicentennial Founder's Day festival. A huge event, with thousands of people and boats on the lake for fireworks. Julian Croft's disappearance was announced the next day."

She looked directly at him. "The quilt connects Julian Croft's disappearance to the death of this John Doe, in the same location, on the same timeline. It implies that Julian vanished on Founder's Day, and that a death occurred at the docks just before. Elspeth's quilt is not merely a record of town history. It's a precise account of specific, concealed events from that time."

Arthur took a deep breath, his gaze moving from the photograph to the John Doe report, then back to Genna. "Elspeth was not one for casual embellishment. Everything she did had a purpose." He cleared his throat again, a sound of contemplation rather than discomfort. "She indicated that her quilt was meant to 'correct the town's memory' of what truly transpired. She felt certain information had been...misrepresented, for the sake of appearances."

"Misrepresented by whom?" Genna asked, her voice calm.

"She did not say. Or rather, she would not say to me. My duty was to ensure her final wishes were honored, which involved allowing the quilt to be discovered, and its narrative to unfold." He tapped the corner of the John Doe report. "I confess, I always suspected the secret revolved around Julian Croft. But the specific details, no. This... this certainly changes things."

He looked at Genna, a new glint in his eyes. "You have presented a compelling case, Genevieve Martel. You have, by all accounts, begun to fulfill Elspeth's intention. The quilt is speaking, as she knew it would."

Arthur Vance leaned forward, adjusting his glasses. "She was very specific on one point," he said, his voice low. "She told me, 'The story everyone knows is the one Franklin Croft needed. The quilt is the one that's true.'"
