Everything here is free to read and needs no account. Chapters publish in order and stay at the same address. A serial's contents page says how many chapters exist, how many are planned, and when the last one went up, so you always know whether you are caught up or whether a story is still running.

What we publish

Character-driven stories with a clear shape: family drama, small-town conflict, second-act revenge, cozy mystery. The kind of plot where the tension comes from people who cannot simply walk away from each other — a bar that has been in one family for three generations, a bookshop nobody wants sold, a woman who bought a ruin on an island and found out why it was cheap.

A chapter runs roughly a thousand to fourteen hundred words, about five minutes of reading. A serial is planned as a complete season with an ending decided before the first chapter is written. It is not an open-ended feed that stops whenever attention runs out.

How to read it

Start anywhere. Every chapter page says where it sits in the run — "Chapter 5 of 25" — and links back to the beginning, because most people arrive in the middle of a story rather than at its first page.

The site remembers where you stopped, in your own browser, with no account and nothing sent to us. The header then offers to continue from there. You can change the theme, the text size and the reading font, and those stay too.

An account is optional and does one thing: carries your place across to another device.

How the stories are made

They are drafted by AI, inside a plan and a set of rules we set, and every draft has to clear a sequence of automated checks before it can be published. Most drafts do not clear them and are never seen by a reader.

There is no editor reading each chapter before it goes up. We state that rather than implying a review that does not happen — a claim like that is worth nothing the moment anyone examines it. When something is wrong

Published chapters get corrected. If a chapter contradicts an earlier one, or a name or a date is wrong, tell us — a chapter number and the sentence is enough. Continuity reports are genuinely useful and we act on them. See contact.

How it is paid for

Advertising. There is no subscription, nothing sits behind a paywall, and no part of a story is locked or delayed for payment.

Who publishes it

The Nightstand is independently published. One address reaches the people who run it: hello@story.imsb.info. We read it.
